Doomerism: The Pernicious Force Defining Our Age Andrew Torba, August 19, 2024 Share this: Doomerism is a pervasive and pernicious force that has come to define our age. Doomerism is characterized by a sense of impending doom, a belief that the world is on an irreversible downward spiral, and a profound lack of faith in the future. This mindset can manifest in various ways, from apocalyptic religious beliefs to fear-driven political strategies and alarmist media reporting. Doomerism has a detrimental impact on society, eroding trust, fostering cynicism, and stifling innovation. The media is of course complicit in the propagation of doomerism, as fear serves as a potent catalyst for clicks and views. Sensationalist headlines and alarmist reporting have become the norm, as news outlets vie for the attention of an increasingly fractured and desensitized audience. This relentless barrage of doom and gloom further erodes the public’s capacity for critical thinking and discernment, engendering a climate of perpetual apprehension and distrust. In the realm of politics, doomerism rears its ugly head as a potent weapon. Fear, as a potent motivator, drives votes and enables these unscrupulous actors to manipulate the populace for their own nefarious ends. The result is a polarized and dysfunctional political landscape, characterized by gridlock, cynicism, and a profound lack of faith in the democratic process. Doomerism has seeped into the world of technology, fostering an environment in which fear drives regulation and centralized control. As concerns over privacy, security, and the potential misuse of advanced technologies like AI continue to mount, those in positions of power seek to exert greater control over these burgeoning fields. This, in turn, has engendered a climate of distrust and apprehension, stifling innovation and the free exchange of ideas that are the lifeblood of technological progress. In the ecclesiastical realm, doomerism finds its footing in the form of dispensational eschatology, a theological framework that posits an imminent cataclysmic end to human history. This pernicious eschatological framework has given rise to a veritable cottage industry of doomsday false prophets, who exploit the fears and anxieties of the faithful to line their own pockets. These charlatans prey on the vulnerable, peddling their apocalyptic wares with little regard for the spiritual and emotional toll their false teachings exact on their followers. This also creates a culture of apathy among Christians who have stopped building things for the glory of God. Why bother building anything or getting involved in politics if the “end is near?” As Christians, we are called to be a people of hope and faith, grounded in the promises of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In a world increasingly consumed by doomerism, it is essential that we stand firm in our convictions, refusing to succumb to the pervasive negativity and fatalism that define this insidious phenomenon. Our hope in Christ is not rooted in the transient and fickle promises of this world, but rather in the eternal and unshakeable assurances of our faith. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus has secured our salvation and ushered in a new era of redemption and restoration. As such, we can rest assured that, regardless of the challenges and setbacks we may face in this life, our ultimate destiny is one of triumph and victory. This hope and faith in Christ should serve as a bulwark against the encroaching tide of doomerism, empowering us to approach the challenges we face with courage, resilience, and a steadfast resolve to overcome. We must not allow ourselves to be swayed by the fear-mongering and cynicism that define this age, but rather cling steadfastly to the promises of our faith, trusting in the unfailing love and grace of our Heavenly Father. Moreover, our faith in Christ calls us to be agents of hope and healing in a broken and hurting world. As followers of the One who came to “bind up the brokenhearted” and “proclaim freedom for the captives” (Isaiah 61:1), we are called to be a beacon of light in the darkness, extending the love and compassion of Christ. By embodying the hope and faith of our convictions, we can help to counteract the pervasive negativity of doomerism, inspiring others to join us in the pursuit of a brighter and more hopeful future for us all. Keep the faith and dump the doomerism. Christ is King. Andrew TorbaCEO, Gab.com Bold Christian Writing andrew torbagab
