This past week we received demands from the governments of Australia and France ordering us to dox Gab users and ban a Gab group with thousands of members—all over content they deemed “offensive.” We refused both requests.
These authoritarian overreaches highlight a critical truth: While free speech has seen historic victories in America, the battle rages fiercely across Western nations that lack First Amendment protections. Governments abroad are increasingly weaponizing “offensive” speech as a pretext to silence dissent and control online discourse. We stand with our French and Australian users as well as all of our users worldwide.
At Gab, we refuse to comply with tyrannical demands to betray your privacy or censor your voices. We extend the First Amendment protections we cherish in America to users worldwide, because free speech is a right—not a privilege granted by governments. But we cannot do this without you.
