The Erosion of Christian Values in the GOP: A Crisis of Faith and Politics Andrew Torba, July 10, 2024July 11, 2024 Share this: The Republican Party, once a bastion for conservative values and a champion of religious liberty, has time and time again betrayed its core voter base, leaving many of us with a sense of righteous and perfect hatred towards the party. In the last decade we have witnessed the steady erosion of Christian values and political positions on crucial social issues in the RNC platform, yet we are expected to dutifully cast our ballots in favor of the GOP as the largest voting bloc under the pretense that there are no viable alternatives. However, the truth is that the Republican party relies heavily on our support and loyalty. We don’t need them, they need us. In the 2016 Presidential Election, Donald Trump emerged as a candidate who promised to restore the values of right-wing nationalism, appealing to a wide range of conservative voters. However, eight years later, under his leadership, the Republican Party has undergone a significant transformation. This week alone, Trump has drastically altered the party’s platform, gutting traditional marriage values and pro-life positions, while hosting a fundraising event aimed at courting the support of the LGBTQ+ community. The Republican Party’s shift towards more liberal social policies under Trump’s leadership has the potential to reshape the American political landscape. As the party abandons its traditional stances on issues such as marriage and abortion, it is highly unlikely that new supporters who were previously deterred by the party’s conservative ideology will be attracted to the party. All this transformation does is alienate long-time Republican voters who feel that the party has strayed too far from its core principles. The Republican Party has the same problem that the evangelical church has: it is deathly afraid of offending liberals (read non-Christians) and not at all afraid of offending God Almighty. The Republican Party’s preoccupation with appeasing non-Christians and people who will never vote for them has led to a series of compromises that have eroded its moral and spiritual foundation. By prioritizing the opinions of those who do not share their values, the party has inadvertently distanced itself from the very principles it was founded upon. This distancing has had several negative consequences, both for the party and for the nation as a whole. By pandering to secular and liberal beliefs, the Republican Party alienates its most loyal and devoted supporters: the White Evangelical Christians who have long been the backbone of the party. This absolutely will result in a decline in voter turnout and reduced support for the party in future elections. By constantly shifting its position to appease liberals, the Republican Party is also losing credibility among its supporters and the general public. This loss of credibility will undermine the party’s ability to effectively govern and enact meaningful change. Why bother voting Republican when they offer us a secular liberal platform? The contemporary evangelical church faces a similar crisis of identity. In a bid to remain relevant, “more inclusive, and welcoming,” many churches have embraced secular and liberal worldly views, often at the expense of core biblical teachings. This shift in focus has led to a paradoxical situation where the church appears more concerned with not offending liberals and non-believers than with honoring the commands of God Himself. Do you blame Christians for leaving the modern church? Why bother going to church when you can hear that same exact message on any liberal news station? This new focus on “inclusivity” and social issues in the church has led to a watering down of biblical teachings. The church is lukewarm. Churches now shy away from topics deemed “divisive” or “intolerant,” such as traditional marriage, gender roles, and the exclusivity of salvation through Jesus Christ. This shift has resulted in an environment where those who adhere to “right-wing” views – which, in reality, are simply biblical teachings – are often punished or silenced in the name of maintaining harmony. Like the Republican party, rather than standing firmly on the Word of God, many churches have compromised their beliefs in an effort to cater to a broader audience. This has led to a loss of identity and a weakening of the church’s ability to fulfill its divine mission: to make disciples and spread the Gospel. Just as this policy has had a catastrophic effect on evangelical church attendance, so too will it have a similar effect on evangelical voter turnout for Republicans. Christians have continued to support the GOP even as the party has failed to uphold and advance the values that are most dear to us. This unwavering loyalty has been exploited by Republican politicians, who have used the Christian voting bloc as a means to secure their own power and influence, with little regard for the concerns and priorities of their constituents. We absolutely cannot allow this to continue any longer. We refuse to be doormat of the Republican party. There must be consequences for these decisions or the party will continue its drift into full blown liberalism. The emergence of Christian Nationalism has provided us with an opportunity to break free from this toxic dynamic and reshape the GOP into a force that truly represents our values and priorities. By mobilizing our collective strength and actively engaging in the political process at the state and local levels, we can establish strongholds in red states that protect and defend our way of life, ensuring a brighter future for generations of Christians to come. Central to this movement is the understanding that Christians possess the power to effect real change within the Republican party and the evangelical church, particularly in red states where our influence is most pronounced. By mobilizing our resources and leveraging our collective strength, we can reshape the GOP and the evangelical church into a force that truly reflects and champions the values that we hold dear. This includes advocating for policies that protect the sanctity of life, defend traditional marriage, and promote religious liberty, among other key issues. In order to achieve this ambitious goal, it is crucial that we adopt a proactive and strategic approach to our involvement in the political and spiritual spheres. This entails not only voting for candidates who align with our values but also actively engaging in the political process by running for office, volunteering for campaigns, and participating in grassroots advocacy efforts. By doing so, we can ensure that our voices are heard and that our concerns are prioritized within the Republican party and the evangelical church. The paradox of the evangelical church and the Republican party- appeasing the world at the expense of offending God and their core voters – is a crisis that must be addressed. By embracing secular and worldly views in an attempt to remain inclusive and welcoming, the evangelical church and the Republican part have compromised their core beliefs and weakened their ability to fulfill a divine mission. It is only through a return to biblical values and a steadfast commitment to the truth of God’s Word that we can reverse this decline and reclaim the role as a beacon of hope and salvation in a lost and dying world by pointing to Jesus Christ and His Word. May God have mercy on us.
