Over the weekend I sent out a simple post that started a firestorm. The context of when I sent this post is important, so let’s start there. Amidst a raging week long debate about immigration all over the internet, people who were arguing in favor of hiring Americans over foreign H-1B workers were being called “racists,” myself included.

Shortly after the election I decided it was time to cut back on my screentime and do some digital detoxing. In the lead up to election day I had been glued to my devices watching for the latest breaking news, poll results, or policy announcement that could change the course of the campaign. I was experiencing what many call FOMO, or Fear of Missing Out. I’m sure many of you experienced this at some point or another too, but after the victory was secured I decided that I needed to hit the reset button and take a break from the screens for a while.

In a recent interview, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called for greater federal regulation of social media platforms, asserting that “we lose total control” if these companies do not moderate content on their sites. This follows just one week after former Secretary of State John Kerry expressed concerns at a World Economic Forum panel about the First Amendment posing a challenge in combating online “misinformation” and “disinformation” related to climate change.

It is clear that the fight for free speech online is far from over.
